Saved From Slaughter:
The story of Lucy, Magic, and Lily

Lucy in late September of this year
Thirty horses were saved from slaughter at the DeKalb, IL processing plant in April of 2007.
This is the story of three of those horses. They were inside the slaughter house "on the Kill Floor"
(about to be processed) when the plant was closed by a court decision ordering the shut down.
The driver of these 3 horses was told the horses had to be returned to Cheyenne. Altogether
they survived 5 days of travel by double decker cattle trailer crowded with horses without food or water.
A private citizen stepped in to cover the costs. Meanwhile, the Humane Society contacted HPL for
their transport from Cheyenne to their ultimate destination at the HPL facility on Easter of 2007.
Weary from trauma, they were a bleak site. Lily, the Thoroughbred, was underweight with bad
sores on her front leg and cuts on her face. Magic, the Morgan cross, had an infected and swollen eye
(it was thought his eye was missing). His hooves were overgrown and curling up. He also had founder
in all four feet. Lucy, the Quarter Horse, was covered in lice. Her front hooves were cracked down the
middle and overlapping on the cracks.
After much TLC their personalities started to surface. It was exciting to see their spirit return after
their initial listless appearance. Anyone who has met Magic agrees that he is a true HAM!
All three are in or moving to loving homes soon and are quite happy!
